In the online seminar “Human Rights & Global Governance”, we will discuss which international institutions have been created
at regional and global level to protect the human rights of individuals and vulnerable groups. A key question is why states
agree to international human rights norms and which mechanisms make them also respect these norms. The seminar will
cover key international human rights courts, expert committees and treaty bodies, international bureaucracies, and diplomatic
arenas such as the UN Human Rights Council and ask the question which of these are most relevant for individuals affected
by human rights violations and which are best in achieving broader respect for human rights across the world. The central goal
of the seminar is for students to understand the opportunities and challenges of human rights protection beyond the nation
state.
